Niyall was first elected to Westmorland and Furness Council as one of three local members for Hawcoat and Newbarns in May 2022, following Local Government Reform. A proud resident of Barrow, Niyall works at BAE Systems and is deeply involved in his community, volunteering in a prominent role with the Barrow Sea Cadets. He is a passionate supporter of the armed forces, frequently taking part in military parades, events, and remembrance services, and championing their cause in Council and beyond.
Niyall is also a very active campaigner. His campaign successes include preserving trees in Newbarns, working with council colleagues across all parties in Furness to pressure the local health trust to retain services at Furness General Hospital, and advocating for better care and funding for people with dementia.
In addition to his campaigning and community work, Niyall enjoys supporting local sports teams such as Barrow AFC and Barrow Raiders RLFC, as well as travelling and socialising. He serves as a member of the Corporate Overview and Scrutiny and is a reserve on the council's audit committee, where he helps ensure transparency and accountability in local government. Niyall is also a member of Barrow Town Council and sits on the council's finance committee, and he was a key player in establishing community grants pots for Barrow third sector organisations to be able to thrive.
